How do you write a fictional series? Fiction in simple words is a world and scenarios you create purely out of your imagination, with sometimes the little hints of reality in the details. But, in reality, writing fiction is a whole new experience in itself.

There is an old saying that “you cannot control your circumstances, all you can control is your reaction towards them.” On the contrary, in writing fiction, you do not just have this choice in your hand, but also the liberty to be anything and the possibility to create anything.

If one thing fiction guarantees you, it is the freedom to think. Freedom to imagine. So, when it comes to writing fiction; be aware of the fact that there are no boundaries to imagining the best stories and no rules to follow to create the best but the only ones that keep your reader’s attention pinned to your book or story.

Let’s talk about how we can make that happen.

The Story-arc:

It happens here. Your story, and its birth. Whether it happens in an unknown town or somewhere around the suburbs of the country. In an upscale society lifestyle or boy who lived in the cupboard.

All of the scenarios are the depiction and the foundation of your story. Make sure you put every detail right when beginning with this part of your fiction.

The Rise of the Story

In the beginning, there need to be certain activities that trigger a rising action that further sets the story on a sail. It is this part of the story that decides whether your reader is going to continue on this journey with you or not.

The beginning of the story is not about the description of the characters and the environment in which it happens, but the beginning is the key point in the fiction that leads to all kinds of questions, confusions, and scenarios that further lead toward finding their answers.

The pursuit

Once the rising action or actions have taken place, and the story has been triggered in either a positive way or a negative way, the next and the real part of the story begins. The pursuit.

It is in that part that the real journey is unveiled step by step. In the positive pursuit of the fiction, the protagonist is usually on a journey set by himself, out of his own choice or the minor elements that contributed to the protagonist doing what he is doing.

When it comes to the negative triggers of the story, a protagonist is usually struggling to bring life back to its normal course, how it used to be, before the triggers happened.

Finding the Unexpected

It is then the reality and the truths that unfold; further in the story that help you cast your spell in the fiction. The surprises that nobody was expecting. The truths that nobody saw coming.

Sometimes, you can keep even play with the ways how the protagonists and readers receive that surprise as ultimate truth, but it entails the real version in the journey further in your fiction.

It is all up to you how you design your unexpected twist and put the truth in those unforeseen surprises.

Introducing New Characters

When you are building your story, or at the story-arc stage, you don’t want to introduce all the characters at once. The new characters should also hold the elements of surprise with their arrival.

Sometimes when a reader has read into the story that they begin your book with, it gets very tricky to disserve their connection with the character or the story that is already being told and divert it to the new one. Most of the time, it is even uncomfortable. But, that is also where the excitement of new comes.

When you have the most interesting characters for your fiction that are not the main character, you better keep them for this interval or the next stage that links the old story to the new one.

The Happy Ending no Longer Exist:

Again, it is totally up to your choosing and taste of the fiction you want to write, but by the title here we mean, the ending is not just about all the scattered pieces falling into the right place, making it one simple happy ending.

When you are able to write a good ending it doesn’t have to be some unnatural, illogical sort of a happy ending, but it can have a beautiful, heart-touching, and revolutionizing ending too.

There can be many ways to write your writer the amazing ending, which can be very interesting too if you are not afraid to explore the options and possibilities.

A reader needs to be immersed not just read

When reading a story, there may be many parts including the description that may sometimes sound too much detailed or unnecessary, but you need to realize that these are the exact parts where you get the complete picture of the situation.

The sentence “Sophie died on the deathbed, surrounding family and friends” and the sentence “Sophie breathed her last while holding the hand of her mother as Laila, her friend held Sophie’s face, eyes were filled with tears but everybody stood still, in that frozen silence” both these sentences hold major difference.

The first one is a piece of information not a description of the event. That is where the difference come between a newspaper and a novel.

Make the readers feel what the characters feel. Make them understand that feeling and that can only happen with the clear descriptions of the events, moods, and feelings the character is going through.

The journey of discovery is for both, the reader and the characters

As the protagonist begins his and her journey after all the rising arcs, twists, and the unexpected, it is not just the main character or the rest of the character seeing the truth unfold but the readers too.

The journey goes hand in hand. The evolution and the transformation of the character and the readers go side by side. Keeping an element of mystery for both is the only way to keep your readers interested and on that journey.

When you are done ticking all the elements in your fiction that we mentioned, we would suggest you meet the right kind of agent and then a publisher as soon as possible. If it takes time to do so, then never stop pushing your limits and being consistent and patient on this journey. Because remember?

All good things for those who wait!

Happy Writing!
